
“When can the order ship?” sounds like a simple question. In eyewear manufacturing, it rarely has a simple answer.
A factory may need only a few weeks to run a production line, yet the complete project can still take several months. Drawings must be checked. Colors need approval. Samples may require adjustment. Materials, lenses, packaging, inspection, and export preparation all sit on the same timeline.
The most useful date is not the factory completion date. It is the date the finished eyewear can leave the factory with the correct specification, quality, and packaging.
Factory lead time usually refers to the period required to complete a defined manufacturing stage. The problem is that different suppliers may start counting from different points.
One quotation may count from deposit payment. Another may count from sample approval. For a custom project, production normally cannot start until the frame design, color, logo, lenses, and packaging details are confirmed.

Simple samples are often completed in roughly 7 to 15 working days after all artwork and specifications are approved.

The factory also needs to check details that are easy to overlook on a screen: hinge clearance, temple opening angle, lens groove depth, frame balance, nose support, and polishing allowance.
A new custom sample often takes 20 to 40 working days. Complex acetate, titanium, or mixed material designs may take longer.
A common case is a buyer requesting a thinner temple after seeing the first 3D drawing. The change appears minor. It may affect the hinge area, screw position, mold strength, and polishing tolerance. That is no longer a cosmetic revision.
The first physical sample is not always the approved sample.
Color matching may need another round. A logo may look too small once placed on the temple. The frame may fit correctly but feel front heavy. These are normal findings.
Bulk production should normally be counted from approved sample confirmation, deposit receipt, and final specification sign off. Until those items are closed, the factory is still preparing—not producing.

An order containing one frame in two colors is easier to schedule than a collection with twelve models, four colors per model, and different lens treatments. The total quantity may be similar, but the second order creates far more changeovers, inspections, and packaging combinations.
Production completion also does not mean immediate shipment. Finished frames still require final inspection, cleaning, labeling, packing, carton checks, and export documentation.
Two orders with the same quantity can have very different timelines. Product structure, materials, finishing processes, and approval speed usually matter more than the headline unit count.
New molds, unusual hinges, thick to thin transitions, embedded decorations, and mixed materials add engineering work.
Designs that look attractive in a rendering may also be difficult to polish, plate, or assemble consistently. A responsible factory should raise these issues before tooling begins, even when that discussion adds a few days.
Custom acetate sheets, special plating colors, gradient lenses, polarized lenses, photochromic lenses, and non-standard accessories may require separate purchasing schedules.
Surface finishing is another variable. Hand polishing, two tone plating, or detailed paint filling cannot always be accelerated by adding more operators. Some processes need stable curing, cooling, or drying time.
Packaging can become the unexpected bottleneck. Frames may be ready while printed cases, cloths, sleeves, or retail boxes are still being corrected.
Large orders require more production time, but SKU complexity often causes more disruption than volume alone.
Peak season capacity, testing requirements, third party inspection, and tighter cosmetic standards can all extend the schedule. A buyer accepting only a very narrow color tolerance should expect more sorting and possible rework.
That is not necessarily a problem. It simply needs to be included in the delivery plan.
