Sampling should not begin with “make it like this photo.” The factory needs enough detail to judge whether the design can be repeated, not merely produced once.
The starting point may be a CAD file, sketch, reference frame, or marked-up image. The factory still needs dimensions, material, lens type, hinge structure, logo method, colors, target market, and order quantity.
A design can look balanced on screen and feel wrong on the face. A 1 mm bridge change may affect comfort more than expected. Engineers normally check lens width, bridge width, temple length, front curve, rim thickness, and temple opening before tooling.
Printed marks, laser engraving, metal plaques, and embedded decorations also use different processes and tolerances.
The factory reviews mold requirements, material availability, MOQ, tooling cost, and lead time.
Some designs need correction. A thin acetate rim may crack during lens fitting. A decorative metal part may create a weak welding point. A sharp temple profile may polish unevenly. Better to solve these issues before production.
The sample stage is where a drawing begins to behave like a product. Most expensive mistakes can still be corrected here.
For a new model, the factory prepares tooling or modifies an existing mold. Materials are selected, components are formed, and the prototype is assembled with the planned finish, logo, hardware, and lenses.
Acetate may require CNC cutting, tumbling, polishing, and lens fitting. TR90 depends heavily on mold accuracy and cooling. Metal frames need careful welding and alignment.
The first sample is rarely perfect. A plated front may twist slightly. Temples may open too wide because the hinge angle came from a thicker frame. These problems expose weak points before mass production.
Measure the frame. Wear it. Fold it repeatedly. Place it on a flat table and check whether both temples sit evenly.
Key checks include fit, hinge movement, alignment, color, surface finish, lens function, logo position, and weight. Comments should be specific. “Reduce bridge width by 1 mm” is useful. “Make it more comfortable” is not.
After revisions, the approved piece becomes the golden sample. It is the physical reference for production and final inspection. Once approved, it should stop changing.
Approval does not mean the machines should start immediately. The factory must lock the specification sheet, bill of materials, color references, logo files, order quantity, packaging details, and delivery plan.
Acetate sheets can vary by batch. Plating colors can shift between suppliers. Lens colors that match in a catalog may differ under daylight. Reserving one material batch for the full order is usually safer.
A pre-production sample may also be made with actual bulk materials, especially when the sales sample was produced outside the normal line.
Once documents and materials are frozen, production moves from individual attention to controlled repetition. Every unit should follow the approved sample within agreed tolerances.
Acetate frames are cut, machined, drilled, tumbled, polished, and fitted with hinges. Injection frames are molded, cooled, trimmed, and finished. Metal frames involve forming, welding, polishing, and plating.
Acetate can distort under excess heat. Injection parts can shrink unevenly. Metal fronts can move during welding. Plating can reveal hidden scratches.
Good production teams measure during the run. A drifting dimension across the first hundred pieces is a warning. Waiting until assembly makes correction slower and more expensive.
Frames then move through coloring, coating or plating, logo application, hinge installation, lens fitting, and adjustment.
Assembly looks simple from a distance. It is not. Screw torque, hinge tension, temple angle, lens bevel, and front symmetry affect the finished feel. A frame may look acceptable yet feel cheap because one hinge is tighter than the other.
Operators need both the golden sample and the specification sheet. One shows appearance; the other defines measurable limits.
Quality control works best as a series of small decisions. Catching a defect after polishing is cheaper than finding it after packaging.

Inspectors check dimensions, symmetry, surface marks, color consistency, hinge tension, screw security, temple angle, logo accuracy, and lens fit. Repeated defects should trigger a process correction, not just more sorting.
Several frames with the same scratch near a hinge often indicate a faulty fixture. Fix the fixture. Re-polishing every frame only hides the cause.
Final inspection compares finished units with the approved sample, specification sheet, and customer standard. Non-conforming pieces are reworked, rechecked, or removed.
Export orders may require testing for materials, lens performance, mechanical strength, or labeling. These requirements should be confirmed before production, not after the cartons are sealed.
